If you evolve too slowly, you will not survive; that is the law of nature. Survival therefore depends not only on defining what must be done, but also on acting at the right time. We can see this in the German automotive industry, it knew since ages that electrification would be the new "must do" but the timing of acting was far too late, and too slow. The industry was very aware but was still not capable to act with speed, China was. Why was the German industry too slow?
I believe there are several reasons: arrogance (we are the best!), underestimating of competition, the mechanical engineering culture (mechanical in the lead, not software engineering for example), quality driven instead of market and consumer driven, planning written in stone, slow change processes, and more.
However, even if these are all valid, there is one superior reason for being too slow which is the organizational culture, the governance of decision making and collaboration, very much in big companies in Germany, and not only in Germany. They allow themselves to take years for developing a new technology, a new product, a new machine, as if there is no urgency, as if there is no war. Compare the German speed with the technology development speed in the Ukraine now. The bureaucracy is still huge, political debate for funding intense, no real urgency: today you should take a week or 2 weeks to design a solution using AI with the right group of people and not 2 years. I believe that it is possible to speed the processes up with 90% at the product side as well as at the production side: with a different Governance system and with AI.
Urgency demands New Governance! Good leadership should bring that. Wake up!
